cpu overload

hello

i have a macbook pro retina early 2013.

2.4 ghz , 16 gb ddr3 memory , and with high sierra.

i'm using the computer for several applications like editing videos and music.

lately i experience cpu overload in the beginning of a task even when using small amount of plugins .

for example i can use ableton live with 3 or 4 channels with one plugin on each channel and still have cpu overload.

the cpu overload is not permanent. if i close the application and then open it up again the cpu is regular but after some time it will peak again.

its driving me crazy because its allmost impossible to work with.

i can see in the activity monitor high kernel usage and i did all the things i know to try and fix it but nothing changed..

i wonder if someone can help me

maybe i can do some test in order to show you some more details.

thanks a lot

MacBook Pro with Retina display, iOS 11.4

Google Chrome is a notorious resource hog. New releases of Safari and Firefox are faster, smaller footprint, more reliable, and fewer memory leaks.

You should consider an important rule-of-thumb proffered by Apple Support, for keeping your Mac under control:

"No more than ONE new item a day." Choose wisely and run it long enough to understand it impact.

Jul 21, 2018 9:12 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

im using firefox sometimes...

but i feel that there's much bigger problem then just some memory leaks.

as i say before i was able to use 100+ plugins in one project in ableton live and have 30-35 % cpu usage.

now with 4 plugins its 120% cpu usage.

and the weird thing is that its coming and going.

i thought in the begining that its connected to graphic problems but i'm not sure

Overloaded disk will effect function. Ideal is to have as much as 50% free, but 30% should be fine. Also the MacCleaner stuff is known to be deadly, and you will have to follow steps to remove it. "Bad Apple for Apples". I would even suggest dumping the anti-virus, but if you feel you need it, than I would dump at least one of them. MacCleaner, MacJanitor, Clean my Mac anything like that says it boosts performance are all to be avoided and if too late, removed, causing you many more problems than they will ever fix. I notice in your report that you have what I would consider a large amount of Swap used. Another indication of lack of Ram and/or disk space. My experience has been that MBP's work better when you primarily just have the operating system and programs on the home drive and use external drives for most data storage including your photographs, video files and music, at least once you start getting 65-70% filled. I try to run with over 200 GB of free space on a 500G drive and its not hard to do, and that's with some photographs, and music, and work documents. When it gets down, I start moving stuff over. The operating system and actual programs don't take up as much drive space as one would think.
