Mac mini (late 2012) as a server cannot access using AFP?

Hi,

Ia m using a Mac Mini and have enabled AFP on the server and cannot connect to the server from my MacBook Air (Late 2010).

They both have the latest system updates installed.

Any ideas?

I can connect using SMB, but when I do I can no longer connect to my Time Machine hard drive which is shared from my Mac Mini.

Mac mini, macOS High Sierra (10.13.2), i5, Late 2012, 4GB RAM

If the 2012 mini is running 10.13.6 then the sharing the external drive to Time Machine feature has been included with the OS. As you know that would have to be done via System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing.

Did you configure the "Share over: AFP" and "Share as a Time Machine backup destination" by right-clicking on the destination drive, and then, choosing "Advanced Options..." that you selected in File Sharing?

See also my more recent post "Server Connection Failed" as I have now lost access to the Mini from the Air using file sharing completely (not just the Time Machine volume).

Well, if the MBA can't access the mini at all, as you can guess that's the reason it can select the mini for Time Machine backups. That will have to be resolved before we can go any further on this post.

Hi, Yes to all questions. Both 10.13.6. Mini is running as server. Time Machine disk works fine for backing up the Mini itself, but Air won't connect to the backup even though it shows it in Time machine as a valid drive. External drive is HFS+ and journalling is on.

Oddly now I can't even connect to my Mac mini at all as a server, but can screen share it onto my Air ?!?

Hi Tesserax,

Again yes to both questions. i.e. I have shared the Time Machine volume and set it to be a Time Machine share by right clicking.

It is all quite strange as everything had been working perfectly for some time (years) through OS upgrades and then stopped suddenly.

Have tried to consider what I may have changed that could have caused the problem and cannot think of anything. As I say I could see and mount the Time Machine volume on my Air but it wouldn't accept that the volume existed 😟.

Thanks.

Agreed re Time Machine.

Interestingly been running a few tests today.

If I turn on file sharing on the Air the Mini connects faultlessly. Nothing special. Simply turned it on clicked on the Air in the sidebar and straight in.

Also tried booting the Mini using older versions of boot disk. These are on 10.13.5 and 10.13.2 and show exactly the same messages.

Though the message for an SMB failure is slightly different to that showing when trying to connect using AFP.

The AFP message says "Check the Server Name or IP address and try again. If you continue to have problems contact your Sys Admin." Clearly the IP address is known as is the host name as this is showing in the side bar.

This is rather frustrating...
