Apple Watch won't turn on after three weeks without use

I was away for three weeks without my Apple Watch. Before I left I charged it fully and powered it off. However, since I got back the watch won't turn on. There seems to be an image of the charging cable on the screen with a green lightning bolt that turns red once the charger is disconnected. If I hold down both buttons at the same time the image of the charging cable pops up and then the screen goes black again. It's now been charging for over 24 hours so it's certainly not just dead. Could someone perhaps tell me what is wrong or what I should do next? It was working flawlessly before I left and I'm lost without it!

You don’t say how old the watch and its battery are, so I have to guess. If the battery was starting to degrade and it lost charge while you were away, the battery voltage could have dropped below the “safe to charge” level. A seriously discharged lithium battery can become hazardous to charge, and most devices will lock out if the voltage falls to a warning level.

After 24 hours attempting to charge it is unlikely to recover. Contact Apple Support and arrange to get your watch checked. Apple will report and advise your options after inspection.
