Fan runs wild from Arabesque screensaver

I noticed that when I'd step away from my new laptop and return the fan would be spinning wildly out of control.

Turns out it was the Arabesque screensaver kicking in.

Using a Hot Corner I tested it. After 45 seconds or so I could start to hear the fan, then by 90 seconds it was running full blast. Moving out of screensaver mode it took about 2 mins for Mac to recover.

The default (but boring) Message screensaver does not do this.

I'm guessing it's an isolated issue with your Mac and this is the first complaint of this nature I've seen here at the ASC.

To rule out any 3rd party software that might be contributing download and run Etrecheck. Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Since I don't sit and watch my screensaver run I'm not included to rule any of them boring.

Oops! I quick looked through the list of screensavers and missed Arabesque as being one of the defaults installed with the OS.

I have one third party filter that does require a lot of horsepower to run. Not surprising when you watch it:

But Arabesque is pretty minimal. I don't see why that one would cause the fans to ramp up. The copy on your drive may be damaged.

Hello Kurt and OT....

Thanks very much for your responses. Here's some additional information about my experience and the report you asked for.

I did upgrade as you recommended macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 (17G65)

I closed all background programs, such as Dropbox, killed Chrome, etc.

The problem persists, and I made a video of it. https://youtu.be/ho0Ou0MdJqU

start - state of computer, open programs, Intel Power Gadget views

0:31 - started screensaver

1:31 - notice the touchbar light goes out, and this is when things start to rev up

2:12 - louder

2:47 - even louder

3:30 - full on loud

4:36 - I take screensaver off, and you can see the stats from Intel Power Gadget were off the charts

over the next 1.5 minutes you can hear the fan start to die down to normal

One interesting note is, the first time I tried this today (the PC had been powered off) it took a full 4-5 minutes for the fan to start blowing once in screensaver mode. On the second and subsequent attempts the timing mirrors the video.

I haven't tried many of the other screensavers, but "Flurry" and "Message" worked fine. I guess the simple answer is to just not use the "Arabesque". That's not much of a solution though and given that I'm sure it's CPU intensive, but geez this is a pretty high-end processor.

Here is the report you requested, which I ran right after I concluded the video.
