Files with the .xmi extension are commonly known as XML Metadata Interchange Files and as Extended MIDI Files.

Compared to MIDI files, .xmi files are smaller and require no further information about timing. Although these are considered audio files, they do not refer to actual audio information. Aside from these two common uses of .xmi files, some applications such as EverQuest File, Winamp Extended MIDI File, and a lot more are also associated with it. These files are also commonly opened with No Magic MagicDraw, Eclipse IDE for Java Developers, Liquid Technologies Liquid XML Studio, Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect, Nullsoft Winamp Media Player 5.6, FMJ-Software Awave Studio, etc.

Thank you, Leroy, I know you mean it good to me!

Unfortunately, but for a "computer-layman" like me, your list of ref. Programs? - I have never heart of and would not know to implement it to fix my problem.

(Apple would not help me for they want to sell me a new system of theirs.)

Think, I have to live with such shortcomings and forget about some old files.

regards from Munich to wherever you are

A missing index.xml file dialog is caused by attempting to open a Pages v5/Numbers v3/Keynote v6 document in the older iWork '09 applications of the same name. There is no index.xml file internal to the newer applications because of a complete application rewrite, and the new document format.

Formally quit the respective iWork '09 application. Then you can double-click the same document to have it open in the appropriate newer application designed for it.
