How does one delete items in list of Favorites in Safari?

Trying to set up my wife's Safari (I use Firefox) and list of favorites is cluttered with many websites by default that she will never use. How does one selectively remove these? Would have thought Apple would have made this a routine feature. Have seen rather complex method suggested in old posts--surely there must be something simpler than that! Also, how does one add to the list?

IMac, OS 10.13.4, Safari up to date.

Select the item, then control - click/Delete.

To add, load the desired web site, then hover the cursor over the left side of the URL bar until you see a + surrounded by a circle. Click and hold on that, then select Favorites.
