Use the force quit option in Activity Monitor.

Otherwise boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, as that prevents any 3rd party software from running and you should be able to delete those files.

It is a PUA (potential unwanted application) developed by PCVARK. You don't need to install any other apps to remove this PUA, please read my blog to remove it manually: Remove Mac Tonic from Mac OS X - SecureMacOS

I did try to remove the two files with the word "tonic" out of my Library as well as remove it from login but

it was still there according to Activity Monitor. Could not delete it or force quit this malware. Should have tried

deleting in "Safe Mode" Yesterday I broke down and purchased

Combo Cleaner premium which removed it- I had issues with Mac Cleaner Virus previously

otherwise my decades old mac has had no problems with insidious malware. Maybe these "Cleaners" have

stock in malware programs, who knows.

His only other alternative then is file recovery software. Using such software is always a crapshoot.

What ever he does he should stop using it. Any disk activity now is overwriting his photos.

Afterwards it would be a good idea if he ran an EtreCheck report and published it here so that we can check out if Mac Tonic did any other damage besides his photos. It can be downloaded from Etrecheck – System Information
