I got a new number. How do I get apple to recognize it

I recently switched companies and had to get a new number. My new phone won’t recognize my new number for iMessages because for some reason my apple account still recognizes the old number even tho it is deactivated. I’ve deleted the number from the account but it still won’t change. Any help?
