Cursor jumping backwards while typing on MBP, 13”, late 2016 model Resolution I think:
I think I have finally figured out this annoying problem! it was quite by accident as I was looking at all sorts of common denominators trying to isolate my typing activity in hopes of figuring it out. I even made an appt with our nearby Apple store Genius Bar for advice and possible replacement. I’m still going to keep my appt this Saturday evening as I might learn something.
It’s pretty simple. If you look at the distance between the top of the trackpad to the bottom of the space bar on a newer 13” MBP it’s only about 1/16th of an inch or so. I happened to notice this when I tapped the space bar during typing I was actually tapping the lower part of spacebar AND the upper part of the trackpad at the same time ever so slightly and guess what? Cursor jumped back and above one line! I managed to duplicate what was happening. Never realized this before. This was important as I wanted the Apple tech guy to see what was happening. I wanted to make sure they could see what I was trying to describe. And duplicate in front of them.
THEN, I tried again to purposefully do this same action and again, cursor jumped backwards and above (not always in same positioN as before. Insertion point changes). It’s a combination of hitting spacebar and trackpad at the same time where they almost join and that is why the cursor moves unexpectedly. Amazing! I have since been more careful when tapping spacebar with my right thumb and have finally resolved this maddening problem. The trackpad is SO close to spacebar you can understand how and why this happens...especially when you tend to type quickly not paying attention of where your thumb is touching after each word you type. Check it out and see if this doesn’t help you to be more careful. Woohoo!
