Is the JVC GY-HM600U compatible with Mac computers?

This week I acquired a JVC GY-HM600U, a discontinued camera. I formatted the SD cards in-camera and shot some test footage. I took out the SD card, put it in a card reader attached to a USB port on my Mac, and got the message: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." And three buttons: Initialize, Ignore, and Eject.

I tried formatting the SD card via the Mac, in a variety of formats, as well. When doing this and then inserting the SD card back into the camera, the camera insisted on reformatting the SD card.

So basically I have a computer and a camera that will not communicate with each other. (I also tried the USB port on the camera straight into the computer, with the same error message.)

Mac is about 9 years old, running OS 10.6.3.

Am I stuck? Does this camera talk to Macs at all? Is it a question of my Mac being outdated?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.3)

well.....it might. Updating your mac might be helpful, very helpful. I think you're running early Snow Leopard. Good heavens !! I think that was the last OS to come on DVD. about all I could find for that was something to do with Clip Manager for your camcorder (Yup, there's a Mac version and a Windows version too) **

sez it'll do HD MPEG 2, AVCHD, .MOV, .mp4 (of some kind) and something called .MXF (what that is, I have no idea)

Last time I transferred footage from a camcorder (VHS-C or 8mm, i believe) to my Mac, it went something like this:

1: use Final Cut Pro or iMovie. 2: cross fingers that your camcorder plays nicely with either of those 2 applications. Plug in a firewire cable, press play on the camcorder then iMovie takes over and records the video. I don't think this camcorder has a firewire connection, so you can skip that part of it (it's also known as IEEE 1394) ...soooo.... Apparently it's clip manager for the Mac. That's how you'll be doing stuff with this camcorder. There's no need to take the SD Card out and put it in a card reader and hook it up to your Mac. Just leave the card in ,and use Clip Manager. Then I suppose you can plug in the USB cable, and tell it to export whatever footage to your Mac. about the only documentation I could find for using this rascal was for windows, no mention of Mac at all. However, all is not lost

-connect camcorder to mac using a usb cable, you should see a message saying "Change to USB Mode", then select change using the cross-shaped button (up or down arrrows) then press Set button ( 0 )

here's the user manual for the clip manager software, if it's relevant to you

hope this helps you out....I'm a little confused on this one

** there's also a firmware update for the camcorder itself--available at the 1st link. As to how to apply it, or what it does-I dunno. JVC doesn't really list any Mac requirements or mention Mac's at all, apart from the Clip Manager thing..
