Can I play 4K video on YouTube using Safari?

Is there a method to add VP9 support to Safari for Mac? I know that I can use Chrome but I don't like Chrome and I often use Picture In Picture mode which Chrome haven't. I'm using latest Safari on macOS 10.13.6 on MacBook Pro 2017 13".

Apple is focused on HTML5 streaming video and whether they will, or will not incorporate Google's VP9 video codec support in Safari is unknown. I am also unaware of any Safari extension that will allow VP9 streaming at 4K.
