No video on Facetime

Facetime App starts up and immediately notification is received that Facetime has no video. The Facetime screen is completely black, and the green video light at top of screen steadily blinks. Help?

Hello lanrussell,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand that you're encountering an error when using FaceTime on you Mac. I would be happy to point you towards a resolution.

Here's a resource that can help:

If FaceTime isn't working on your Mac - Apple Support

Specifically, start with the steps in this section:

If your camera or microphone doesn’t work

One of these solutions might help:

  • Quit FaceTime, then open FaceTime again.
  • Restart your Mac (Apple menu > Restart).
  • Make sure that FaceTime isn't open, then see if your camera works in another application, such as Photo Booth. If it doesn't, you know that the issue isn't related to FaceTime.
  • If you have multiple cameras or microphones connected to your Mac, check the Video menu in the FaceTime menu bar to make sure that you have the correct camera and microphone selected.

If you're still encountering the no video error, some helpful information to know would be: is the Mac in clamshell mode when the error appears? Could you tell us of any additional troubleshooting steps you may have tried?

Cheers!

Hi lanrussell,

Thanks for following up with the additional information. Using the System Information app, I would like to see if your FaceTime camera is detected next. It should be located under the USB header. Here's how to open System Information:

About System Information on your Mac - Apple Support

If your FaceTime camera is not detected, reset your SMC, then check if the FaceTime camera appears in System Information:

How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

If the built-in camera on your MacBook Pro is still not working properly after trying those steps, consider visiting an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider ( Apple - Find Locations ) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Store, you can make a reservation here:

Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

Take care!

Hi lanrussell,

At this point, it sounds like it would be best to have the Mac inspected by an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. Allowing or denying incoming network connections for the Enhanced Video app should not affect your built-in camera. If the app was installed from the App Store, try uninstalling it from Launchpad. If the app was installed from another source, you may need to remove it from Finder > Applications instead:

macOS Sierra: Install, update, and uninstall apps

Have a wonderful rest of your day!

Hi Starr C. - thanks for your response!

I followed all solutions as mentioned above. It appears my camera is NOT working even when FaceTime is closed - ie., doesn't work with Photo Booth either. When in the Photo Booth app, the green camera light blinks as it does in FaceTime.

I tried going into Messages/Details and the camera option is grayed out.

I looked at Security and did not see anything checked (?). I did receive an alert after restarting last time that asked about "enhanced video", but I cannot find it again :/

Hi chris_g1....thanks so much for the continued support.

Unfortunately, following your steps as described didn't help.

In System Info, under USB, all I saw on the USB Device Tree was Apple internet keyboard and Bluetooth.

I followed the reset instructions, and there was no change to the System Info.

I do get a window alert on startup 😕 that I do not know what it is, and have failed to mention to you:

Do you want the application "enhanced video.app" to accept incoming network connections?

I always click Deny....I have no need to share my computer with anyone or allow any network to access it.

I am not sure what that is - can I get rid of it?

Many thanks again!
