magic mouse tracking problem

this is the second mouse that has exhibited this problem. instead of tracking smoothly, the cursor is very jerky and sometimes moves only in the vertical direction despite contrarywise mouse movement. cleaning the lens has no effect. dumping preferences and then restarting the computer doesn't resolve the problem. why is this mouse so terrible? does Apple even care they've developed a substandard product? i'm ready to abandon the ****** thing and buy logitech.
