iTunes says wrong password for restoring backup.

Trying to restore backup made today in iTunes to my new phone (iPhone 6 plus). I couldn't remember the password for iTunes so I changed it. When I enter it to restore the backup it says the password is incorrect. I have tried a few times to no avail. The password is correct as it has allowed me on this forum. Please help

The password to access this forum is the one for your Apple ID. The password used to protect your encrypted backup can be different, unless you have used the same in both places.

A backup password will not be your phone's passcode, your Apple ID password, or any other password you may have used unless you chose to make it so the first time you created an encrypted backup. So first, consider the password you might have used in the past, when you first had to enter one when creating an encrypted backup. It's time to start guessing (you get unlimited guesses); to speed the process uncheck Encrypt Backup and you will be prompted immediately.

I've compiled a list of backup passwords that other users who posted in the forum have found by successfully guessing:

  • First iTunes account password (40 different users)
  • Old iTunes account password, but not the oldest one
  • Password used for almost all accounts (3 different users)

Since I cannot reply, I would clarify that many MDM corporate profiles force backups to be encrypted and use passwords to protect backups (Google Suite for one, used in my company Apply settings for iOS mobile devices - G Suite Administrator Help).

If you use the same device for work or the company has BYOD policies, it can happen that you have to install a profile that will force to encrypt backups.

Thanks for the tip, duly bookmarked!
