I got an iphone from a pawn shop but it asks for an apple ID and password. How can I unlock this phone?

You need the previous owner to Turn off Find My iPhone Activation Lock - Apple Support
Otherwise, you will not be able to use the device.
Take it back to the pawn shop and get your money back. There is no way to remove activation lock without knowing the password used to set it up. The pawn shop should never have sold it in that condition as nobody will ever be able to activate it and use it. So unless they specifically labeled it as unusable, they should give you your money back and then just drop that device off at a recycle center.

As with previous posts, unless you have access to the previous owner so you can get his phone number, there is no way. If the device still keeps previous owner’s SIM card, check in the settings. If Apple is sending a code to that phone number, you need it.
Return it. No one can help you with that.
Find the person who can give you that number.
