I know you can create depth of field with a series of different objects placed away from the camera and use focus modulation, but what if I have one 2D image ?
(The parts closer to the camera are lighter in color, the ones further away are more opaque. The gives a natural depth of field but I want to increase the effect in Motion. I wonder if Lighting / Lens blur can help etc?)

What you're looking for is 2.5D or "parallax effect" - taking a flat 2D image and separating parts of it to create depth.
