I have a 2014 Mini (OS 10.13.4) connected to a ASUS PB258Q lcd monitor via an HDMI cable. I get sound through the monitor's speakers and monitor's headphone jack. Cannot get sound from the Mini's headphone (line out) jack. Is it something to do with HDMI or a faulty headphone jack? Headphone jack does make low buzzing/ white noise.

Sorry, it's not default, though you can output sound from your Mac mini if you choose it with System Preferences > Sound.
Good to see it is the default. How does one find that out?
A better question might have been how to work around the default?
The monitor that I connect to with HDMI has lousy speakers.
I'd prefer to listen to music via external speakers that would normally connect to my Mini through the headphone port.
Suggestions?
