Ipod Shuffle won't work with headphones

I've had an iPod Shuffles for almost 5 years, but just now it started to give me problems. No matter what pair of headphones I use, I can't use it as a remote for the shuffle i.e. to skip or pause songs. No one else seems to have this problem. It's really annoying because the shuffle doesn't have any buttons and I dont want to continue to listen to the same songs.
