Apple Mail crashing on first use since updating to 10.11.5 - EtreCheck Found some iCloud related issue

Apple Mail has been crashing on me since updating to 10.11.5. After uninstalled Little Snitch and Bitdefender with no change in outcome, Mail works fine in Safe Mode only. Really can't figure out the issue. The Mail Box has been rebuild. Everything in my user folder Library/Mail has been deleted. The three G-mail accounts from internet accounts have been removed and reinstalled with the same outcome. The only thing that seems to prevent a crash is to uncheck Calendar in the Gmail profile in Internet Accounts. I don't get why this is a deal breaker, everything was fine until the update to 10.11.5 and still with 10.11.6 it continues.

Thoughts.

Rule 1 of Macs is don't install garbage like "Bitdefender". The report you posted indicates it remains installed, along with the usual suspects passing as various and sundry "doctors", "cleaners", and "doctor cleaners". If you expect your Mac to work, uninstall that stuff.

Excerpted from Effective defenses against malware and other threats:

Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up", "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.

  • Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
  • They generally operate on the flawed premise that a Mac accumulates "junk" that needs to be routinely "cleaned out" for optimum performance.
  • Trial versions of those programs are successful because they provide the instant gratification of greater free disk space.
  • That increased space is the result of irreversible destruction of files, programs, or operating system components normally protected from inadvertent alteration or deletion. The eventual result will be unreliable operation, poor performance and random crashes that may not become evident for months or even years after their use, when updates to programs or macOS are eventually released.
  • Memory "cleaners" that circumvent macOS's memory management algorithms work by purging inactive memory contents to mass storage, which can only result in degraded performance and accelerated hardware failure.

Don't know why its still showing up in the Etrecheck report.

it's showing up as a safari extension. I don't think that would bother anything besides Safari. Should be able to go into safari extensions panel to delete.

TrafficLight.safariextz - Bitdefender SRL - http://trafficlight.bitdefender.com/ (installed 2018-06-19)

& your terminal scan did look for safari extensions.

Here is an important clue.

Mail works fine in Safe Mode only.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

You want to run etrecheck in safe mode. Compare the three reports. One of the diffs is causing the problem.

Thanks for the schooling but it does not begin to solve my issue.

All my ****** software is not having any issue with the second user account I created to test out mail. For some reason which I can't pin down mail is not functioning correctly in my primary user account only.

Some direction on what my options are in solving this issue which started after upgrading to macOS 11.13.5 would be welcomed.

Aug 9, 2018 5:24 PM in response to Raul Velazquez

You missed the point. The apps John mentioned are known to cause problems with macOS. Get rid of them. There is no use in us going further until you delete these apps. It is best to use the uninstaller for each of these apps.

apps to get rid of asap.

Before posting my etrecheck report on the forum the 3rd party softwares were uninstalled and reinstalled after discovering no change in the Apple Mail issue. Your imposing a personal preference over providing aid in troubleshooting a solution to a corrupt file in an otherwise functioning MacOS.

Mainly after stating that the 3rd party software has no affect on the Apple Mail program in the second user account. Which was created to test if any 3rd party software was having any affect on the Apple Mail software.

Apple Mail opens fine without crashing or generating a "quit or quit and rebuild mailbox" dialog box in the primary account when deactivating the gmail accounts in Internet Accounts within System Preferences. The issue began after updating to 11.13.5 and continues in update 11.13.6. The accounts have been completely removed and reinstalled. Still resulting in quit or rebuild MailBox on first opening.

I would very much appreciate if we can move past the 3rd party software I choose to have installed in my MacOS. I'll be happy to post any console read out or Mail crash reports that may provide some clues to what maybe afflicting Apple Mail and my Gmail accounts.

- Thanks

Aug 10, 2018 2:34 PM in response to Raul Velazquez

Ok I'll play along. I have gone ahead and removed the 3rd party software. I ran the Etrecheck again but I noticed I still have the software installed. I have gone in and removed what this tutorial instructed for Bitdefender plus Dr.Cleaner.

Below is a terminal listing of both Library and Extension showing that BitDefender is not present. Don't know why its still showing up in the Etrecheck report.

After a deep dive with EasyFind I removed anything with the words Bitdefender in it. Including a clean wipe of Disk Drill Trash saving files stored in /.clever. Dr.Cleaner was no where to be found. The Trafficlight was also removed.

I still have them listed in the EtreCheck under software install past 30-days but I imagine that's some log.

Mail is working without a quit or quit rebuild dialog box.

Apologies for questing the removal of the 3rd party software. Clearly I wasn't thorough enough when I first removed it.

Apple Mail crashing on first use since updating to 10.11.5 - EtreCheck Found some iCloud related issue
