Specs: 2.4ghz Intel core 2 duo
Software: Mac os x lion 10.7.5
I tried to do a factory restore on my mac as I plan on selling it. I followed the steps and erased the hdd, but after doing this it would not allow me to reinstall osx lion.
Do I need to purchase a disk to install a previous version of osx as I'm not the original owner?
And if so, what disk do I need?

The original install discs that shipped with the computer. If you don't have them you need to call AppleCare, what I'd do is buy this DVD Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple and follow the steps in What to do before you sell or give away your Mac - Apple Support, install 10.6. from the DVD then upgrade to 10.6.8 using Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 and then upgrade from there. This all assumes the computer has adequate RAM (4-6GB) and is in excellent mechanical shape.

No problem, you can log into your iTunes account and de-authorize any prior devices that you no longer use, see the instructions in the link above.
and then upgrade from there.
This shouldn’t be done past 10.6.8 when preparing to sell or give away the computer. Any OS which originally came from the Mac App Store will be tied to the seller’s Apple ID and not transferable.

So to confirm;
I need to purchase and install snow leopard 10.6 and then upgrade to 10.6.8?
Also, I just realised I forgot to sign out of iTunes before erasing the hdd. What affect will this have?

Correct!
On the iTunes account, you are limited to 4-5 devices (I don't recall if it's 4 or 5..iPhones, iPads, Macs, etc..) per account so if you forgot to sign out then you have 1 less device you can use.
I've finally got around to purchasing the disk and started the installation process.
I restarted the machine with the c key held down (which took 15 mins) and now It will not let me select the Hdd to install osx.
I can't upload a picture to this but it reads;
'mac OS X cannot start up from this disk' and there is also a yellow warning sign on the image of the hdd ⚠
There is no other disk to select and I don't know where to go from here. Please
How is the disk formatted?
