transfer content with time machine

I bought a new Mac book pro 13' but I do not have enough space to transfer all my data from my hard ware to my new device. If I have to select items to define the same parameters that I previously use on my old Mac book (I tunes/ I photos..) will I be able to add extra content later or use my hard drive which contain time machine as an external HW to access to my other files like documents, movies?

When I set up my macbook pro, it did the put your computer next to it for setup thing. Did that get my files? I see some but don't want to wipe my macbook air for trade it in without being sure. There is a moment during the process of migration where Time Machine asks which contents to be restored in the new computer.
