problems in hearing the sound on the main window (hear it only on the Audio Sample editor) on an old ver. (5.5)

i tried to load a song made on logic 5.5. Logic x did not let me but I still have logic 9 and succeeded to load the song. but I can only hear sound on the sample editor but nothing on the main window. I see that that there is no main Output channel but only Master 4 channel which stuck on 7-8 output and i can't change it. I tried to add an Output channel on the enviroment window but still didn't hear anything on the main window (still heared on the Audio Sample editor) and it didn't appear on the Mixer window. Any help please?

virtzberg, good news: I managed to open the project in LPX 🙂 So, from what I could see in the Environment, it's a pretty sophisticated setup. And the reason why you cannot hear any output is, this project saved all the hardware audio interface assignments for the setup you used to produce it at the time (perhaps, that's how Logic 5.5 used to work). In other words, Logic (Pro 9, in your case) does not see the audio engine for audio signal output. Sample Editor just works with individual samples and previews audio using the default interface, I suppose. So the solution is quite straightforward, you have to reassign all the audio track objects to Core Audio.

So, right after you open the project, you'll have to go to the Environment and select Audio layer. Then if you click on one of the audio track objects and select the Channel setting in its object parameter box, you'll see that (ASIO) audio engine is ticked:

So in order to fix that, delete the channel splitter object (you may move other objects in Audio layer out of the way too), then select all the audio track objects at once, and with them all selected, go to "Channel" setting in the parameter box and choose Core Audio (make sure to note the volume fader settings for each track, because they will be reset; you may use the screenshot above for reference):

After you switch these objects to Core Audio, you'll be able to create an Output object:

You'll be able to hear the audio tracks in your project after that. Problem solved! 🙂

Let me know if anything doesn't work as I described. I'm using Logic Pro X, but its Environment workflow shouldn't be much different from Pro 9. As for the MIDI tracks, they are all intended for external MIDI instruments, but can be easily reassigned to software instrument tracks, in case you want to remix this project in the box using plugins. So hope it helps. Cheers!

You'll have to create a channel in the Mixer and assign this channel to the Output object you created, in order to have it in the Mixer. Likewise, when you do this, you could right-click on the channel and put it into arrange. Finally, select all the channels in the Mixer that are supposed to play back audio and assign their outputs to the newly created Output. You might want to double-check the output assignment with their respective objects in the Environment, as well.

From what I see on the screenshots, most of your tracks' output is going to "Stereo Out", except for the first audio track (AIRY L) which is going to "Out 7-8". There are four master objects assigned to four different outputs (Stereo Out, 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8) in the Environment. Besides, I can also see a channel splitter object (or two of them, maybe) in the Environment screenshot. However, there's no "Stereo Out" object.

Is it possible for you to select a channel splitter object in the Environment to see where it sends the signal?

I suspect that might be the culprit. Also, when you create an Output object, which audio output is it assigned to? Is it "Stereo Out"?

From what you describe, this can indeed be fixed in the Environment. Looks like an issue with audio signal flow to me. However, it's just guessing. With the project loaded in Logic 9, could you make screenshots of: 1) Mixer (with all channels and their inputs and outputs visible); 2) Mixer layer of the Environment, with Output object selected; 3) The Arrangement. Please, post these here. To make screenshots, press Shift+Command+4 and then select the screen area (typically they are saved to Desktop).

Thanks very much Jotagi for yours endless support and patience but I think I am going to give up...It behaves very strangely and not consistent. Everything that I did did not solve the problem, even when the Output object with stereo outputs 1-2, was present on the mixer. No sound at all except from the Sample editor (From which output it comes to the Sample editor?).

It is from a project from 1999....It was converted to logic 5.5 that was the last version on PC. Than I moved to Cubase on PC but always missed Logic and on 2012 bought a Mac and moved back to Logic.

I don't want to keep on bothering you and I don't know what else can be done, but if you have personal interest in solving this problem, I can send you the folder just with the audio files and the Logic song file. It is only 90 Mb...

on those days that was the norm😁

You're most welcome, virtzberg! That's not much of a bother, really. What I can suggest at this point is for you to upload this project with all its assets (if possible) somewhere to Dropbox or Google Drive, so that I could tweak the Environment on my side using Logic Pro X. It's in fact would be interesting to see whether it's possible to restore it. If you don't mind of course.

It still dosn't work...even if all set now to core audio. In Logic x even there is no audio file in the File editor. That why I tries with logic 9 because there I could see and hear the audio...I see that it works at your place. I have to check more and try to find the problem. In logic X all the audio files are grayed and I can not change the color of them (not in 9).

Maybe I'll try to reproduce what you did by downloading the folder that I sent to you and download the song from there and see what happens... I'll let you know what are the results. Thanks very much!

Could you provide an email address? I can send you the link to the converted (and working) LPX project 🙂

Basically, in Logic X, you need to manually locate all the audio files referenced in the project. There are not that many, thankfully. As for the audio tracks being greyed out, it's very easy to fix: just right-click on any track header, then go to Track Header Components > On/Off (this toggles On/Off button display for tracks in LPX). For some reason these tracks are turned off. Just turn them back on and you're in business.

Yes, finally I can hear the audio tracks on Logic X! Now, If I want to complete the song I have to deal with the endless midi data...a lot of work....I steel don't know why it did not work at my place. It looks like the same configuration... but I could use it as a template: if I would want to open another old logic song, I could just copy/paste all the tracks to it.

There is something strange: I added a Solo button but it doesn't work properly. On an audio track it mutes all, including the track that I solo and on a midi track it does nothing (all the audio tracks are not muted).

Thank very much!
