Photos Library Update Stalling (external drive)

I have a Macbook Pro. Recently updated to High Sierra. Version 10.13.6

Problem opening Photos App. It gets stuck on Updating Library at 27% complete (waited for 5hrs) and have tried launching 3 times.

My Iphotos library is located on an external flash drive card.

I don't use Icloud. I use CrashPlan to back up the iphoto library on the flash drive.

I have tried stopping the back up from running when trying to launch Photos, which didn't work.

This could be where the issue is, but I have no idea how to resolve this. Your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

what is the format of the external drive and how is it connected? It must meet these requirements to use with Photos - Where is it safe to store a Photos Library? Requirements for the external drive

and you need a local backup using TimeMachine or other local backup software - every test of CrashPlan and of all other cloud based backups has failed so you may not have any backup at all

and flash drives are not a smart place to have your Photos library - they are easily damaged or lost and have relative short lives -- your library should be on your internal drive or an external drive meeting the above requirements
