New MacBook Pro - Frequent Disconnect of Magic Mouse 1

Hello,

I recently switched from a MacBook Pro Mid 2015 to the 2018 model (for cpu speed and more memory) and I am using my old magic mouse V1.

In the past, I experienced the common battery connection issues when setting down the mouse too hard.

But now, I see very frequent disconnects of the mouse even when the mouse is not moved/in hand and also sometimes the cursor gets stuck and only will move a few pixel. The first problem is resolved by clicking once and the latter only by switching the mouse off and on. Very frequent means, it happened twice while typing this *g*.

Since both old and new MacbBook are using the same version of High Sierra, I assume this is related to the new hardware. Are there any known issues with the new MacBook Pros?

One difference though: the new Mac is only connected via WLAN while the old one was using ethernet.

Any help is appreciated. This is really annoying.

Andreas

P.S. tried to reset bluetooth already. No change.

I switched back to my previous MacBook Pro and there is NO connection problem.

It is only the 2018 MacBook Pro that has the problem of losing connection to the Apple Mouse.

I also took the Apple Mouse establish a connection with my 2010 Mac Pro and have no

problem, but the Mouse from the Mac Pro has problems with the 2018 MacBook Pro.

The disconnect on the 2018 MacBook Pro needs to be addressed by Apple. 2018 Bluetooth is

not working properly, if multiple older machines work error free AND multiple Apple Mouse

fail ONLY with the 2018 MacBook Pro.

All the ThunderBolt-3/USB-C Macintoshes have some problems in this area, including Macs as old as 2016.

Apple Support Communities is a User-to-User support forum. If other users can not help you think of a fix, No further help is likely to be forthcoming using this medium. There are no standard mechanisms for escalating problems to Apple Support from here, and Apple Engineering and Marketing Movers and Shakers do NOT monitor these forums looking for trends and outstanding issues.

DO NOT "wait for Apple to provide a fix". Unless and until a large number of users present their issues through standard problem-reporting channels, Apple does not know there is a problem, and is NOT working on a fix. Being selfish is the best policy, getting yours fixed helps everyone.

If advice supplied here does not provide resolution, You must take additional steps to resolve your issues. Contact Apple support directly through one of these methods:

• contact telephone support (free for 90 days with a new Mac, or for three years with AppleCare purchase)

• make an appointment at the genius bar at an Apple-owned store for hardware evaluation and advice (free anytime, but after five years parts may no longer be available).

• initiate an Online chat

• Visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider (there may be an "evaluation fee", but if they perform any service for a fee, ask for a rebate of the evaluation fee).

After a couple of weeks, I've now isolated the issue down to it occuring when lots of data is being uploaded by iCloud.

I didn't use iCloud on the old laptop, which could possibly be why I didn't see the issue on my old device.

It's only really when it's uploading a few GB of data - during that time, the mouse will disconnect repeatedly.

Yes, the wifi point uses 2.4GHz - but I can't change that, so I'm stuck with the issue.

With all due respect, Grant, but you absolutely sound like you are telling Frozen Tundra, myself and other users in general explicitly to 'shut up' about this issue on here and on this thread.

Even if 'Apple Engineers' and other Apple staff do NOT monitor these forums, it is our own personal choice to come here and add our voices to an already long list of complaints regarding this very specific MacBook Pro 2018 issue. We have spent excessive amounts of money coming in at a premium that used to justify itself through the smooth and conflict-free excellent usability of Apple devices. What we find now, however, is that there are obvious flaws in compatibility that even persist when going through all outlined steps to rectify the issues.

You are talking to us patronisingly, like to stubborn and lazy children. Be aware that many of us are industry professionals, using Macs for many many years without this specific problem we have come here for.

I don't feel your tone is respectful, and that's neither warranted nor is it courteous.

Jan 29, 2019 9:47 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

@Grant ....

*but* having a strong record of user complaints (on this forum) is exactly the type of evidence you would need to make a case that it is a systemic problem, and not one specific to your setup. As someone that has dealt with Apple many times on this very issue, I've pointed back to these threads (even printed them out!) to prove to Apple that it is not a rogue problem that only affects me, which is generally the first suggestion they've made in each of their support channels (Apple Care, In Person, Twitter Support)

It's also not entirely accurate to suggest that Apple employees don't troll their own support boards to gauge the scale of a problem. You can bet that with keyboardGate, these very forums provided a rich record from which devs, product people and engineers could remotely discover and survey how bad it was, and who it was affecting, in order to make build/repair decisions.

Lastly, I just wanted to say to this entire thread, it's not cheap but purchasing the trackpad has been the final answer for me, because it works without using bluetooth. I finally had to give up entirely on getting the Magic Mouse to work with the 2018 MBP - but the external trackpad seems be the one thing that works.

Cheers!

Max

maxfield-

You are correct in that having this accumulation of complaints MAY be helpful in certain obscure cases, BUT: It depends on the altruism of individuals whether they ever even get read. There is no formal mechanism that escalates issues identified here into any problem-resolution procedure, so I see it as a loosing battle already.

On different issues, there are also multiple other threads with THOUSANDS more complaints that this one, and in most cases Apple or anyone else have not budged on the issues at hand.

Posting here may be cathartic, but it this is NOT the path to resolution, unless someone blurts out a solution that works for them, and it works for you as well.

--------

I am so glad you tried the trackpad solution , and you can get your work done without worrying about this very obscure technical issue.

Jan 29, 2019 12:57 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Us users are trying to find a solution to this serious problem, and I agree with others that Grant's tone here is willfully antagonizing.

Just expand, selling a $5K+ computer that does not reliably work with the *only* mouse the *same* manufacturer makes, is the opposite of a "very obscure technical issue"

I am a designer, at at times this was failing several times within the same hour. I literally cannot work in that scenario, and working is how I make my money. @GRANT Please do not join a thread that has real effects on people's livelihoods only to tell them to "deal with it."

Jan 29, 2019 3:27 PM in response to maxfielfd

Hey Max, you totally nailed it here in your first paragraph. Thank you very much for putting it so succinctly. And to be honest, I feel that Grant's strict kind of 'advice' (i.e., keep stumm about the issue, stop compaining in public, stay alone with it and secretively mail your concern to Apple without letting anyone else out there know you are experiencing a problem they might also face) is kinda suspicious. In fact it's exactly what an Apple representative would say to suppress issues from becoming public. If we're trying to gather mass to make a change, it's the public visibility that'll bring it forward.

We're doing the exact right thing here!

I bought a new MBP 2018 just 5 days ago here in Berlin. I've tried EVERYTHING since getting mouse - and even the keyboard, same problem - to work. Spent 2hrs in the helplines, countless times of resetting bluetooth modules, reformatting systems, reinstalling OSX... time wasted no end. It's so frustrating. Never experienced this with an Apple product, and I own iPhones and iPads too. Without people having posted on this thread I'd never known there was others with the same issue.

I'll try to have this specific MacBook exchanged for a different one of the same line, hoping the problem doesn't occur with every single one but is sometimes due to bad luck. Sadly the trackpad won't be an alternative for me I feel for now, but perhaps I should finally get more comfy with a graphic tablet...

That is NOT what I said. In fact I posted this advice, which you have chosen to ignore:

• contact telephone support (free for 90 days with a new Mac, of for three years with AppleCare purchase)

Jan 29, 2019 3:42 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

I've done all the things you are suggesting, Grant.

I got a service appointment through an Apple service partner, as the Berlin store doesn't have any appointments for the next weeks. Two different cases via online support: one for this MBP Pro 2018 V1 magic mouse/keyboard issue, the other one over an expanded battery issue with my older MBP Pro that has bent its casing.

So I've raised my problem with them. Now this thread can serve as a confirmation for other users facing the same awful issue that it's not them or their fault - but it's Apple's. Gotta avoid corporate gaslighting where you can.

Jan 29, 2019 3:55 PM in response to atoenne

Hey Andreas, I'm not surprised that 'Apple recommended' your post. That's surely a 'solution' any financial business will love but for me, having to pay another whopping €200,- for a mouse and keyboard that were working perfectly until upgrading to a MBP 15" 2018, is not a desirable option at all. With all that planned obsolescence and recent iPhone slowing-down scandals, this leaves a bitter aftertaste. As a designer, I hardly know anyone not using Apple computers, so I expect better from the company than cockily 'recommending' to throw even more money at them. It's terrible enough being left with only USB-C ports these days.

Hello All,

AppleCare did not have a solution for the disconnect problem. They said "The Magic Mouse 1 should be compatible with the Bluetooth and 2018 MacBook Pro. It clearly is not.

I did purchase 2 new Magic Mouse 2's to use with my MacBook Pro. Still need to purchase 3rd, since I like to have a Mouse for home, work and the field.

I can report that the Magic Mouse 2's both work flawlessly with my 2018 MacBook pro. So I would not say this resolved the problem but I got tired of hitting my head against the wall.

Don't worry about the Magic Mouse 1's, I found them good homes within my studio. They are happily connected to 2010 Mac Pro's now.

One more thing.... I can use my 2018 MacBook Pro on the same desk as the Mac Pro and Magic Mouse 1 that was always losing connection. The Magic Mouse 1's stay connected to the 2010 Mac Pro's.

NOTE: I did not have to change WiFi frequencies. That is impractical advice since I travel and are in many different enviorments

that I have no control over the Wifi frequency. It was not necessary to change any WiFi settings.

Solution for my connection problem: Disconnecting ALL of the previous connected Magic Mouse 1's, then connecting the NEW Magic Mouse 2.
