Junk - icloud.com in Apple Mail

hi thank you for reading...

imac, hi sierra, apple Mail

it used to work: the icloud junk mail in the junk mailbox, the regular junk mailbox.

setting up icloud in Mail:

preference; mailbox behaviors, Junk folder:

no option for choosing, the 'junk' folder (brown trash can).

it only shows a brown trash can called 'junk (icloud)'. that folder is NOT in my junk folder. it is below all the other folders, below the normal 'trash' folder.

it is under icloud, then indented

I want it to be in the regular junk folder. (like it is in Mavericks) this is high sierra.

how to fix?

any ideas?

thanks so much, everyone.

If you enter in www.icloud.com by entering Apple ID and password and click on mail create a new folder by clicking on plus sign and name it is as " junk " it will be created in the iCloud server account , and If the apple mail application is opened in which the IMAP account is created using same Apple ID and gmail address is also kept as same , and you are signed in system preferences > iCloud with your Apple ID .

Then , if mail preferences is opened under accounts > mailbox behaviour > junk mail box > click on drop down arrows you will see the brown junk folder that you named in www.icloud.com .

User uploaded file

To delete it in www.icloud.com click on gear icon in bottom left corner of the window , select the brown " junk " folder and click on delete , the junk folder will be deleted both from iCloud server account and IMAP account in the mail side bar and also on mail box behaviour location .

See some screen shots .

HI tygb

I followed your instructions & it seems to be working now. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!

It was really so very kind of you to write all this out for me.

I have all those windows open at the moment: sys pref/icloud, Mail/Mailbox behaviours; www.icloud.com.

I see how they all interact now, at least between www.icloud and Mail. (and very good to know about the sys pref/icloud.)

May I ask another question.

I understand that the default settings for www.icloud.com mail is to

delete all sent and trash messages after 30 days.

I do not want that to happen. I want to save all sent and trash messages on the server until I delete them. is that possible?

I set these settings like this....going to......:

Bottom gear/preferences/

User uploaded file

Made these folders in icloud:

'Sent Messages-ch made'

'Deleted Messages-ch made'

...then selected them here: see screen grab below

what do you think? As one sees, the grey text below says all will be deleted in 30 days....so was that right to do this?

I want to PREVENT Deletion after 30days?

As one sees below in grab: it looks like this in www.icloud.com:

with no 'Folders' below that Folders name:

what do you think?

In www.icloud.com click on plus sign in front of folders .

User uploaded file

A no name folder will be created .

User uploaded file

Press command and delete to empty the name new Folder , and type your desired name in the empty field , for example " some " and click on enter key on the keyboard .

User uploaded file

And can create multiple folders , and if you click on gear icon , click on preferences > accounts , click on drop down arrow of - and set save sent messages to new folder " same ' and move deleted messages to the folder named " same " the sent messages will go the this folder .

So the mails will not be deleted after 30 days and will be saved in www.icloud.com

Thank you dear....great post.

Maybe I am misreading your very thorough and completely illustrated post, but...

Tried as you say. This is also what 'it seems' that apple suggests ( to keep mail from deleting, but it does not work. Still deletes the trash. The 'sent' emails never delete if you set in Mac Mail to 'never' delete, figured that out...oh boy...

what did work was when I choose that new folder I made in icloud, choose it then in Apple Mail.

In Apple Mail settings for icloud:

Apple Mail / Accounts / icloud / mailbox behaviors / Trash Mailbox: choose from dropdown menu the newly made folder.

Note: If one goes into icloud mail preferences and choose to have the new folder one makes for the new Trash folder, the trash will be deleted after 30 days....it even says so there in that preference window: (see light grey text at bottom)

What do you think?

In the end it looks like this:

In icloud looks like:

In mac Mail loois like:

Dear tybg....

Firstly, you are way beyond kind to help like this and explain these things, and to volunteer to keep helping. And, due to your attention on this with me, I have had the ability to presevere thru all this...OMG. So tons of thanks for that too.

1. www.icloud.com / Preferences / Gear:

I guess the main point I am making here is that if one chooses those folders, like that: thru the gear / preferences, my version of icloud does not look like what you are showing....

Means: there is a line of text under those choices which reads 'messages will be deleted from the trash after 30 days'. (your image does not have that text there...odd)

User uploaded file

(It seems 'sent' messages are not deleted by default like I thot, even from the default folders in www.icloud.com.

it is only if there are any messages in the Trash default folders. That does get deleted.)

Does this make sence?

I have found that since I have not chosen the new folder for trash, in the above window, (but left it set to the default trash folder, and instead chose via Mac Mail / Mailbox behaviours, the new Trash folder I made which is listed under Folders that now my trash is not getting deleted anymore.

If i do choose in that window above, the new Trash folder I made, then it changed locations in the left column in icloud.com, and popup up into the top, to the default folders areas. It did not remain in the area under 'Folders'....just saying..

----------

2. Your kind points:

Also I can see you have not set up any gmail account or yahoo as such that is configured .

right, in my mac mail account I am not receiving any gmail or yahoo email, right. (I get way too many emails from those accounts - tons of spam-so just view them online.)

I am only receiving this one IMAP account: icloud (via my Mail account)

It depends upon the internet service provider also , in how many days they delete the mails from trash folder , however you have saved the settings in mail box behaviours

Right, good point, well, in MacMail, did set the trash to NEVER delete as you mention.

3. Mavericks:

Just to stir it up a bit more, in my other computer, running Mavericks, it is even different.

Same set up in icloud is working.

But one has to choose in Mail / Mailboxes: 'Use this mailbox as' then choose trash etc from the options on the left under icloud. plus the settings in Mailbox behaviours is quite different, meaning only 1 option: choose leave on server or get on my mac.

Thanks again dear tygb (thank you, Great Britain?). You are a true knight in shining armour.

Warmly,

hi again....

just went to www.icloud.com / sidebar left bottom gear / rules - I dont have any rules

User uploaded file

zero rules, no rules did I make.

so you show one thing and I show a different thing in the www.icloud.com preferrences window

so basically, I had to control the situation from within Apple Mail settings / Mailbox behaviours

by choosing the new folder I created, and choose it in apple Mail.

User uploaded file

You have not the line of text in this area: you have not the line of text that indicates deleting the messages in the folder that is chosen there. quite odd. User uploaded file

or maybe you meant settings / rules in some other place?...in the upper right?

User uploaded file

nothing changed there either...

hmmmm

odd...

thank you dear tybg...I appreciate..

warmly,

me

If the user has created an an Apple ID and also created an web mail account like gmail or any and signed in with Apple ID and password at the location - opening system preferences > cloud .

Then the apple mail application gets configured with iCloud account , so whatever changes are done on the server account are mirrored in the IMAP account and in its preferences .

Read this article Mail Mailbox Behaviors preferences on Mac - Apple Support very carefully , if doubts are not clear please post back .Also I can see you have not set up any gmail account or yahoo as such that is configured .

It depends upon the internet service provider also , in how many days they delete the mails from trash folder , however you have saved the settings in mail box behaviours , also every person has different internet service providers some use yahoo , google , hotmail services ...etc , and every mail service has different rules .

Aug 10, 2018 9:20 AM in response to HeavennOnnEarthh

I have not set up rules in mail at www.icloud.com see this article iCloud: Set up automatic email filters in iCloud Mail

Thats the reason the screen shot differs .

And regarding gmail account spam mails are controlled by gmail services at the server account see some articles Create rules to filter your emails - Gmail Help

Block or unsubscribe from emails - Computer - Gmail Help

Secure an account that has suspicious activity - Google Account Help

And if you are using IMAP account see these Use rules to manage your email inbox in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

Mail advanced junk mail settings on Mac - Apple Support

Also , whatever rules you set up in gmail server account , they will immediately mirrored in apple mail application , its the user to decide which method to opt to control the junk mails either in IMAP account or in gmail server account .

But it doesn't mean you should create rules on both ways , they will clash .

Aug 13, 2018 8:10 AM in response to tygb

hmmmm, i dont think i have set up any rules in www.icloud.com either.

let me check. thank you for noticing and replying to that.

re gmail:

and thank you for the help w gmail, very very kind again.

ok, dont set up rules in gmail and on mac mail for any one gmail account.

Ok, got it. Will look into that. For now, I just have gmail forwarding to my mac mail icloud.com account.

thank u for your reply
