I need to retrieve old text messages

Do you mean messages that you have deleted, if so have you made any BackUp’s prior to the date that the text’s were deleted, if so you can Restore your device to get them back, but any text’s received following said BackUp will obviously not be.
If you haven’t made any BackUp‘s then the deleted text’s I’m afraid are lost.
If you have a backup that contains the old text messages you can restore that backup to your phone. Note that this will overwrite everything on the phone, not just text messages.

If you mean when people respond to a discussion you can either unselect "Following" (top right) - just click it.
Alternatively selecting your Name (top left) and then select "Preferences" at the bottom of your personal settings, unselect the emails you do not wish to receive.
The first is specific to each discussion and the second act globally for all discussions,trust this helps.
