Why aren't my projects saving in iMovie 10?

Hi everyone,

For the last three months, I've left my iMovie app open while working on an movie project on my 2015 Macbook Pro (iMovie 10.1.9). I finished it today. Exported the file, and closed the app. I realized I wanted to change something on the timeline, and I reopened it. I can't find the project timeline anywhere!

I can't import the exported video file into iMovie.

The Event Library for the project only has the clips I uploaded to the event..

When I click on the Projects tabs -- all three projects (I worked on two others during the three months) are gone.

If I go to the Movies file in my Finder, there are only library files. I don't see a projects folder like in other versions.

I thought iMovie was supposed to save work automatically? Do I need to start a project from scratch every time I open the app? Can I never re-access a project timeline AGAIN?

What gives?????

Thank you!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), iOS 10.13.5

Open iMovie and click on the tab at the top of your screen titled Projects. That will take you to the Projects browser screen where your projects will be displayed as icons.

To import an exported movie back into iMovie drag it into the iMovie media pane or into the timeline of a project.

iMovie does save your work automatically. You do not have to start a project from scratch every time. You can always reaccess a project whenever you want, play it, redit it, share it out as many times as you want.

Hi Rich,

Thank you for responding.

This is what my projects folder looks like.

User uploaded file

Please note that there are no projects and I am showing projects from the last year. There should be 4 projects but NONE are showing. Once I close the iMovie app after I export a file, they always disappear completely.

This is what it looks like when I drag my exported project back into the timeline.

The exported video doesn't show the pieces that I edited together in the timeline anymore. How am I supposed to edit portions of the project now that it's only the combined video?

This is what my Movies folder looks like when I try to import an iMovie Project

User uploaded file

Nothing is clickable and the iMovie Project (I added) folder is empty.

Why are my projects not saving automatically? Why can't I seem to reopen closed projects and edit them? I've had to restart this particular video twice because I cannot find the project.

Thank you

It looks like you have some corruption either in the iMovie Library or the iMovie app. You'll need to do some troubleshooting.

First, try opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys, and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. See if that is any help.

If no luck, open iMovie in a new or different library. To open in a new or different library open iMovie while holding down just the Option key. A box will appear on your screen listing all libraries that you have. While the box is on your screen see how many libraries are listed there and open them to see what is in them. Sometimes projects inadvertently get saved in different libraries than you think. If your projects are not showing up in any other libraries, then create a new library by selecting the "new" option in the box, and do a small test project to see if the project saves correctly. If it saves correctly that would indicate some corruption in your old library.

Failing the above, try doing a reinstall of iMovie 10.1.9. To do that, put your current iMovie 10.1.9 into the trash, but don't empty the trash. Then redownload iMovie 10.1.9 from the app store. Once the reinstall has been successfully completed, you can empty the trash of the older iMovie.

If still no luck, then you will need to try to restore the old library. You can do a restore from your Time Machine backup if you have one, at a point in time before you believe that the corruption might have occurred.

If you don't have a time machine backup, or other external drive backup, then you can look in the iMovie Backups folder on your Mac. To get there, start at your desktop and follow this file path: G/Home/Library/Containers/com.apple.iMovieApp/Data/Library/Caches/iMovie Backups. When you get there you should see a list of previously backed up iMovie libraries. Click on one dated before you believe that the corruption occured. iMovie will open in that library. Check to see if your projects are there.

Regarding importing a previously shared out movie back into an iMovie project, it will import as one large video clip. The edits previously made will have been merged and embedded into the video. As you have found, you will not be able to make more than limited changes. For example, you can split the clip, delete or move the splits, overlay different titles, insert different transitions between splits, and so on. You will not be able to undo or change any previously made edits.
