All Apple watches require an iPhone to setup and use. They are not standalone devices.

You should however be able to download the Dexcom app to any Apple watch once its set up.

We are just users like you, not Apple or Dexcom employees.

However, form Dexcom's own website:

Please note:

  • Your Apple Watch is compatible with an iPhone 5 or later and the Dexcom G5 Mobile App requires watchOS 2.
  • Your Apple Watch will only communicate with your compatible iPhone, not the Dexcom G5 Transmitter. You will not receive alerts, alarms, and other notifications on the Watch unless it is connected with your compatible iPhone. For example, if you have your Watch on and you go out, but leave your iPhone at home, you will not receive any CGM updates.
  • When you wake up your Apple Watch, it syncs your current CGM data from your compatible iPhone. There may be a brief delay before your Watch app shows current information.

Do note however, that the watch will receive calls and messages, and other app data from the paired iPhone too.

You can contact Dexcom at: https://www.dexcom.com/contact

Also there does not appear to be any direct Partnership between Apple and Dexcom, just that Dexcom has developed an App for iPhone and Apple Watch to work with their monitoring hardware.

I have spoken with Dexcom numerous times about this. The tech is available but not FDA approved so the feature is not ‘turned on’ in the app or watch. This was supposed to occur in 2Q2018 but still hasnt happened so perhaps the next apple watch ios will feature this. The apple watch 2 and 3 have the BT capabilities to communicate directly witb the dexcom g5 / g6 transmitters. There are a few open source systems that will enable direct connections - search X Drip. I have not used but by viewing their message board and Facebook groups appear much more advanced, involved and detailed than the Dexcom apps - but I am happy with the Dexcom platform so haven’t moved over. Hope this helps - and be sure to call Dexcom every week or so and tell them to turn on the Apple Watch feature. Keep the pressure up!

The new Apple Watch 4 with GPS + Cellular, I believe does not have to be tethered to an iPhone.

I wonder if the DexCom 6 would be able to talk to this model directly to the App on the Apple Watch without having to pair it with an iPhone. That would be much more convenient.

This is at best only partly correct. Apple Watch Series 4 MUST be paired to an iPhone before it can do anything else, until it has been paired and set up it will be brain dead with only the function to pair to an iPhone available.

Whether other devices will be able to connect direct to the watch remains to be seen once the new versions of all the final software are available and have been tested in the real world. My expectation is that the existing system will remain, where at least installation and setup for watch apps and accessories is performed from the paired iPhone. What happens with ongoing operation after initial setup depends on the functionality provided in the supporting app.

Please remember this is a peer to peer support forum populated by users like you or me, sharing our knowledge. For better or worse we also have our share of trolls and idiots who will offer misleading answers. For best information on a potentially health-critical issue go to the developers rather than some unknown user where you don’t know their experience or motivation.

Actually Phil was awesome and answered your question fully and you came back with a snarky response. And I don't recall any of them saying to google your question. But anytime I have an issue with 3rd party hardware/peripherals I always go to that site first as I'll find a larger number of people using it. And even more so if it is a niche device.
