Portable HDD (Samsung M3 Portable USB 3.0) not recognised when using USB 3
I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) running High Sierra (10.13.6) and tried to plug in my Samsung M3 1TB Portable and it mounted and then suddenly unmounted itself and Finder warned me about disconnecting without mounting. Ever since it has not mounted. Mac doesn't even recognise it. Doesn't show in Disk Utility or Terminal.
Initially, I thought the drive had failed so I connected it into another PC and Mac (2011 edition with USB 2.0) which regnosied it fine and worked without issue. I tried mounting again to Mac 2017 and still nothing. Occationally from time to time it wound mount and then within 2-3 seconds disconnect and warn me about disconnecting without dismounting.
The drive is USB 3.0 and all my other drives such as Pen drives and time machine back up drive are USB 2.0. They all work just fine. I should mention that I am using a thunderbolt to USB adaptor to connect these USB devices.
Today I tried connecting the Samsung drive via a USB 2.0 multi port which was connected to the thunderbolt to USB adaptor. And it worked! The drive now mounts and is fully functionally. This suggests that it is something to do with the functionally of the USB 3.0.
Does anyone know why this might be? I thought there may be an issue with the thunderbolt to USB adaptor which I bought from apple, so I connected my iPhone to the Mac via it and it worked fine.
Obviously I have a workaround for the problem but would rather not have to use USB 2.0 just to access my drive especially when its USB 3 compatible.
Thanks in advance.
