On my IPad only( nothing on my IPhone) indicates a unread message. I have read all of my messages, and even deleted all of my messages and still one message shows are unread . I have checked the unknown senders list too.
I have looked into a blocked number, removed all the blocked numbers. Turned app off, and back on. Turned IPad off and on. Still the ghost message appears. Any suggestions??

It stayed stuck on one , even though more messages were received or no messages were received. I did find a Fix... I turned my messages off in the general section and then rebooted unit and that fixed the issue.

So you disabled iMessage within Messages settings and then restarted and then re-enabled it? If you could confirm that, it would be tremendously appreciated.

Yes, thats correct.. and not just turning unit off but press face round button and the off button at the same tome. I call it rebooting the unit. After that once the iPad turned back on automatically the message issue was fixed.
My compliments to you for reporting this for it sounds like a reasonably painless way to solve this problem which is affecting a lot of people lately! Disable iMessage, hard reset, re-enable iMessage!
Is it absolutely stuck on 1 or does it increase and decrease back down to 1 as new messages come in and get read?
