Early 2015 Macbook Pro is making a crackling sound on the right side of the laptop

Hello,

I have a early 2015 MacBook retina and it is making a crackling noise on the bottom right of my keyboard. It's almost as if I am squeezing a plastic bottle. It occurs from time to time, I took it to the Apple store and they cleared some dust inside the fans and it appears to have gone away. However, it has only been a day or two. Apple said there is no hardware issues, however, I am really disturbed by the sound. My Mac has also slowed down a bit, I've been getting some programs crashing or taking a while to respond, any ideas what this could be? Should I be worried?

I would really appreciate some help.

Thanks!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch,Early 2015), macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)

Try these first.

Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

it appears to have gone away. However, it has only been a day or two.

Not sure what you mean. Has it gone away and are you expecting it to return?

Some people have said that changing the Sound Effects in System Prefs / Sound has got rid of the crackling noise. Don't know why it should, but try it. The Apple Store techs probably checked your audio system but you can do it, too. In Applications / Utilities, open Audio MIDI Setup / Built-in Output / Output and click on Configure Speakers at bottom right. Click on each speaker to test the sound.

As for the crashes and slowness, please download and run Etrecheck and post its report here. It will give details that may help find the cause of the issue, such as malware, insufficient memory and other things. It is safe to use and is often recommended by leading members of this forum.

There is nothing alarming in the report but you should consider doing a few things.

Get an external disk -- or two -- and do Time Machine backups.

Avoid torrent downloads, it's asking for trouble with malware. At least remove the torrent app from your login items.

The Red Crucible gaming app seems to be overloading your CPU and may be causing the crashes.

You could also run Safe mode which checks things and does some repairs if needed. Then restart normally.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

Regards.

Thanks for your reply. I reset my NVRAM/PRAM and the SMC.

What I meant when I said "it appears to have gone away. However, it has only been a day or two." the sound no longer occurs, but it is still too early to tell I believe.

I also did the audio system check and everything seemed fine. I also changed the sound effect in system preferences.

Why are Time Machine backups important/how will they help? As for uTorrent, some websites provide a torrent (like Unity3D) which is more convenient for me to use. I don't think the uTorrent app itself would harm my computer in anyway, right? As for Red Crucible, if I continue to play this game will it eventually ruin my Mac? Like in the long run?

Thanks again! 🙂

It does not have to be Time Machine, but it's best to have one or two backups for the time when your hard disk fails, unless you don't mind losing all your data and are willing to start over afresh.

As for torrents, it's not the app but what you download. Take a look here.

Regarding the games, if you drive any machine hard it will most likely wear out quicker.
