Shown as solved but it certainly is not. Knowledge Agent error still arriving on screen a few time a day!

Anyone any idea what can be causing this ongoing problem and importantly how I can stop it. It is not crashing anything it is just an on-screen annoyance.

'Knowledge-agent quit unexpectedly' is the main error message on screen. All I do is click 'send to Apple' and they should have around 1000 of the reports from me by now. I appear to be the only one experiencing these errors. No, I don't feel lucky at all :-)

Any help will be appreciated.

The first thing I'd try is to create a new user account ( call it TEST ACCOUNT ) and log into that account to see if the problem can be reproduced in that account. If it cannot that likely means something is wrong with just your normal user account.

First as you have already been advised, uninstall all antivirus apps per the developers instructions. Mac OS was designed to be EXTREMELY secure and if simply kept up-to-date and otherwise left alone it will remain secure. Mac OS does not benefit in any way by having any anti virus, cleaning or other third party "maintenance" apps installed.

Next you have way to many items set to launch, look at your launch items and pare it down to the bare essentials. Finally you have installed a large amount of Internet Plugins, many should be uninstalled.

To be honest, your system is such a mess you may want to consider doing an erase and install and starting over again. If you decide to take that route, only restore your data files. Then only manually install the apps you need.

And, it looks like you have software installed associated with a WD hard drive? Please note that an external drive does not need any software/apps in order to function - all it needs is to be formatted correctly (which can be accomplished using the built in Disk Utility). If you wish to get rid of that (which can play havoc), you would need to reformat the drive meaning you'd need to temporarily back up whatever you have on it since it would be erased.

Hi Sparkleberry,

Yes I downloaded and ran EtreCheck and followed instructions given by Dominic23 but nothing else was heard as you can see from the lack of follow-up.

Programmes running or could be running on the iMac are: (all latest updates)

OS High Sierra

Parallels Desktop 13 (I need it for Windows 10 Pro)

McAfee Pro

Adobe Elements 18

DxO Photo Lab, and other DxO programmes

Microsoft 365

Kindle and other minor apps

A few other dormant programmes until woken (rarely)

Many thanks for your excellent advice, which I will follow.

The reason for using McAfee is simply because I am running Windows 10 Pro through Parallels Desktop on the same drive. I need Windows for my amateur radio interests, and ACCESS to run a QSL Bureau database for our Society. If it were not for these I would be 100% Mac. I can leave McAfee on the Windows 10 partition.

Having this extra OS and a number of programmes maybe the cause of the mess, or the fact that this has been running since December 2009.

I will remove the rubbish as you and others have recommended and if still there every hour or so, sometime a few times in 10 minutes, I will reformat and start over. Trouble is the re-installation of Windows 10 Pro and radio bits :-(

Many thanks to you, and everyone for advice and assistance given.

Kind regards

Bryan
