Premiere Pro prevents shutdown

If I shutdown my Mac (OSX 10.9.5) without having saved a Premiere project that is open (CS6), the Mac won't shut down. If the project has been saved, shutdown proceeds as normal, otherwise it hangs in limbo forever. If shutdown is in limbo, it immediately proceeds as normal if I go into Premiere and save the project.

I'm wondering where the problem lies. Is it likely caused by Premiere ignoring the shutdown command, or OSX not sending the shutdown request to Premiere?

Every other bit of software responds to shutdown, but not Premiere.

Any idea why this is happening, and how it might be fixed? For example, is there a Terminal command that can tell Premiere to shutdown? I actually wanting to understand what's behind this problem; and if I can fix it, well and good.
