What can be done to speed up deleting photos?

Deleting photos from Photos for Mac OSX is slow - rarely will a photo delete complete in less than a couple seconds, and frequently they will take 8-10 seconds!

By "complete" I mean the time it takes from when I issue the delete command (regardless of whether I use the keyboard or mouse to issue it) and the time I can start using Photos again.

This delay makes sorting and editing my photos maddeningly slow.

It seems to depend on where I am viewing the photos while I am deleting them.

When I select several photos at once, while viewing the photos in the Moments, then enter ⌘⌫, the selected photos will be deleted instantly and I can continue browsing quickly. But when I delete photos from a smart album, it may take longer, until the deletion photos will be responsive again.
