Transfer from External HD incredibly slow....

When I disabled iCloud Drive on my Macbook Pro, it deleted a ton of my files and folders....

I have most of them backed up on my external HD, but they will not all finish copying back to my laptop for some reason. It says copying - the file name to Desktop, but it gets stuck at 8.4MB and then just stays there forever, never completing. I am confused and sickened by this honestly, as I have had an almost endless string of problems with this computer every since it updated to High Sierra 10.13.6, and I am truly tired of having a computer that is basically no more than a big paper weight.

I should note that it does actually move, but just so slow that it is soul-deadening. This is totally new as I transferred the majority of the files over earlier without any such FIVE DAY waiting period. 😠

Am I wrong, or is this a broken computer??

Thanks in advance!!

PS. this entire time that I was typing this, that same file was SLOWLY copying from the External drive, but it is still not even close to done....

With the drive still disconnected from your Mac, I would suggest that you boot up your Mac and then consider using EtreCheck and posting the resultant report for us to review. (Note: The EtreCheck report does NOT contain any personal information.)

  • You can download EtreCheck fromhere.
  • Start EtreCheck from a normal user account. Optionally, you can run it from a user account with Administrator privileges.
  • Select a problem from the drop-down menu to enable the "Start EtreCheck" button. Optionally, you can add comments on what issues your Mac is experiencing, especially to aide others with similar Mac issues.
  • Click on Start EtreCheck
  • Allow the program to run to completion.
  • When done, select Report from the left-side window to display it.
  • Select the "Share Report" icon.

    Select Copy Report

  • Paste the report to your reply post.

Hi zlloyd1,

Have you tried using a different cable to connect the drive (if available)? Perhaps the cable you're using is defective or only supports USB 2.0, which is extremely slow.

Another reason why copying might be slow is because of possible errors on your hard drive. Try running First Aid on it by opening Disk Utility, selecting your external drive and clicking First Aid. Consider running First Aid on your internal drive as well to check for errors.

If you wish to test your Mac for hardware defects, you can run Apple Diagnostics by holding down the D key as you turn on or restart your Mac. More details here: How to use Apple Diagnostics on your Mac - Apple Support

It is formatted for Macintosh, and is connected by USB....

Now, I am getting infinite loop beachballs, whenever the external drive is connected....

To the point where the only way that I can shut down the laptop is to cut the power, because the stupid beachball won't allow me to click anything. 😠

As I may have stated previously, I am on the verge if just giving up on Macintrash forever, and switching back to Windows machines. This is getting ridiculous now!! 😟

.I cannot stand those beachballs, especially when they completely lock the computer down frozen.

Mac is garbage, Apple should never have tried their hand at operating systems.

The beachball thing is happening randomly, while I am using the laptop, but does not seem to become so pronounced until I am using the external drive....

As well, if the external drive is not plugged in, the beachballing does not become permanent, and unending to lock up the computer completely. Normal beachballing during normal use is never infinite looped, unless trying to use the external drive. Just a beachball will pop up for a few seconds, and then go away, but with the drive hooked up, the beachball becomes permanent, and will not allow you to use anything on the desktop. This will force you to cut the power to shut down the computer, which is wildly frustrating!! 😮
