Photos - Faces - change key photo

I know this should be obvious - but it isn't, and the old posts regarding this matter just don't work.

How can I change the key photo for a person in faces? Right clicking doesn't bring up the option to do so.

I'm on a MacBook Pro running High Sierra

Thanks

now everything has been sorted by date only and even syncing cross to ones iPad just seems to make it worse

Did you just enable iCloud Photo Library on the iPad? Which version of iOS is running on the iPad?

Syncing my iCloud Photo Library on my Macs with my iPad has ccasionally messed up all my albums.

And now it has gone and lost that person altogether in the ”People”section and I can only find them if I search for their name.

I liked iphoto but find Photos totally maddening.

If it is only one person that does not allow you to manage the album and to assign a key photo, I would recreate the album. Search for the photos of the person by entering the name into the search field. Then open a photo of the person and type a slightly different name into the text field with the name below the faces circle (enable View > Show Face names" to see the circles)

When you rename the person, do not use any previous name from the list of suggested people. To easily to be able to recognize your new name, add a prefix, for example "New: Peter Pan" instead of "Peter Pan". After you named a few "New: Perter Pan" photos, test if the new People album is now working correctly. Can you select a key photo?

Like I said in my post....It’s just not there in the menu. That's why I’m asking. I feel that this should be totally logical but it isn’t.

Then you're not doing it correctly. If you don't have your mouse preferences set to the right button/side as a right-click then use Control + click to get to the contextual menu.

That Option is in iPhoto 9.6.1, Photos 3.0 and Photos 4.0.

I have tried over and over to find it but that option just isn’t there. And now it has gone and lost that person altogether in the ”People”section and I can only find them if I search for their name.

I had everything sorted nicely in iPhoto, in Events, Albums and Faces, now everything has been sorted by date only and even syncing cross to ones iPad just seems to make it worse. Album content now seems to be completely randomised.

I despair.

Aargh!

Ok - Update

I went back to iPhoto and synced - basically removing lots of stuff. Then I re-synced with Photos.

Haven't fully tested everything yet - but it seems to have the Albums in the right order.

iTunes is still somehow picking up "People" that don't exist in my People selection. It seems the only way I can remove them is by deleting their names from every photo that it's on...very tedious.

It is still assigning random pics as the key photo and I don't seem to be able to change that on the ipad as the option isn't available...any ideas?

Thanks

I am running the latest versions of ioS 11.4.1 and High Sierra 10.13.6 . However I can not sync my entire library from the Mac on iCloud since it is too large to do so. So I am syncing via iTunes.

I have not tested iTunes Photo sync in Photos 3.0 on High Sierra, because I am now syncing with iCloud Photo Library, but iTunes Photo Sync used to sync the smart albums as well.

If not all albums are syncing, you could try to remove the photo cache folder from your Photos Library. This is described here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203156

And make sure, that iTunes will see the correct Photos Library. iTunes is syncing with the System Photos Library. You make your current Photos Library the system Photo Library, by clicking the option "Use as System Photo Library" in the Photos > Preferences > General. The button "Use as System Photo Library" should be gray, to show it has been enabled.

I see that iTunes syncing and iCloud syncing cannot live hand in hand.

However I am wondering what would happen if I enable it since it says it will delete 25,000 images!!

Would it then start to upload again and solve all my problems? The library is at least 30gb.

I do wonder whether part of my problem has been down to migrating from iPhoto originally and having such a large photo library.

Photos will remove all photos, videos, and albums that have been synced to the iPhone using iTunes and replace them by the items synced to iCloud.

You need to make a current backup of the Photos Library on your Mac, before you enable iCloud Photo Library syncing. There is an occasional glitch, that turning on iCloud on an iPad or iPhone will delete any albums and folders in the Mcs, that are also syncing with iCloud. If you want to try syncing with iCloud Photo Library, enable it on your iPad before you enable it on your Mac.

Syncing with iCloud Photo Library has many advantages. It is a true syncing. You can easily sync Live Photos or Depth effect photos, and the standard albums and faces will sync (if the Mac is running High Sierra or newer and the iOS device iOS 11 or newer). All adjustments will sync across devices. But a disadvantage is, that iCloud Photo Library still does not sync smart albums. So, if smart albums are important for you, stick with Tunes sync.

Ah I've just checked the size of my MacBook Photo library - it is 148Gb. So I don't have enough storage on the Cloud since I'm on the 50GB deal.

I guess all I can do is keep syncing via iTunes?

In this situation what would happen if I synced my iphone and ipad to the iCloud but not my Mac?

Thanks for all your help on this.

If you only synced the iPad and iPhone with iCloud, it would be difficult to download the photos from the iOS devices, because downloading to the Mac via USB would not work, at least, if the iPhone were using optimize storage. You would have to use iCloud to download the photos to your Mac. You could use an empty library on your Mac to sync with iCloud. Or a library with just selected albums for syncing.

Ok I've been at this for hours now:

Firstly I deleted all the names on the photos of the person who went missing during my attempts yesterday. Then I started again, the option to "make key photo" now appears in the contextual menu - hurrah. Must have been some weird glitch.

Here are the other issues I am having:-

1. Syncing doesn't always sync new Albums created on the Mac - I can't figure out how to force this to happen. I know I did make it do so once but think it might have been by deleting and starting again!

2. Folders within Albums on Mac wont appear on the iPad

3. Smart Albums do not sync to the iPad

4. Albums that have synced onto the ipad, appear in a totally random order.

5. "People" on iPad does not seem to relate to People on the Mac

6. "People from my Mac" on the iPad seems to have old people from when it used to sync with iPhoto...and it seems there is no way to delete these.

7. "People from my Mac" - on the iPad, chooses a random key photo which I then can't change on the iPad.

8. I can neither merge nor delete "People" on the iPad.

You can see why I am so frustrated.

Thanks for all your help

No I was doing it correctly, I can assure you. Photos is a bit glitchy at times. I eventually resorted to deleting all names from this persons photos and re-created them again. Now the option is there on the MacBook. However the ipad is still picking up People that don't exist in my Photos "People" section. I think I have some carry over from migrating from iPhoto.

On the iPad it is defaulting to making the first photo in that person's set, the key photo. It is ignoring the one allocated on the Macbook. I have tried to correct this but the selection options on the iPad do not include "Make Key Photo"

Part of my issues have been due to syncing with iPhoto over the years and then migrating to Photo. However Smart Albums don't sync - this glitch has been ongoing for years with Apple. I first noticed it with iTunes. Still not resolved...I wonder why.
