trying to factory reset ipad mini 2 - device not recognised on itunes

hi I have an apple ipad mini v2 bought 3 years ago, we cannot remember the password as have not used or updated it for many months so I am trying to factory reset it. however its not being recognised by iTunes when I connect it via USB to my laptop ( I've downloaded iTunes for windows onto my laptop).. I've tried updating iTunes, restarting both my ipad and laptop etc. its just showing an error message re device not recognised. I've followed all the reset instructions on this page but can't get any further. im happy to completely wipe it if needed but just cannot do anything with it at the moment!

Have you tried forcing the device into recovery mode?
