why is trash bin icon white and empty?

I deleted files but trash bin icon is white on my desktop and when I click on it, it's empty.

I want to securely erase deleted files but don't see the deleted files.

Also the "secure empty trash" option in FIND is gray.

How can I make trash bin hard to get to? On Finder under 'actions', 'remove to trash' is very close to the action 'new file' today, when trying to open a new file, by mistake I pressed on the action 'remove to trash'. and with a click a year's work file was sent to trash. lucky for me that I noticed it as it happened and could undo the last action. I hope nothing was deleted on the way. my question is there a way to make this action not so trivial, something like a two action operation? or anything else to prevent such mistakes? Ram

Unable to close Trash Finder window Recently I was emptying my Trash and a small Finder Window will not close. It doesn't change (it's been at least a week) and the small "x" to the right of the blue line doesn't close the window either. If I click on Trash and Open it, it appears empty. But if the 25,317 Items that show in the above Finder Window are still on the external drive then it is taking up space on the external drive it was deleted from...I think. Any idea on how I can close out this window since there isn't a red X in the top left corner of the window? Thanks Andy
