international phonetic alphabet on mac os X yosemite

I'm trying to figure out how to type IPA symbols on my mac os X Yosemite 10.10.5 and am going crazy trying to figure out how. I've gone through my keyboard preferences and the input sources and have added US extended but I cannot find anything pertaining to IPA symbols. I have looked through old discussions and everything that has been mentioned does not show up in my input sources nor anywhere else on my mac. Need to be able to type IPA symbols for graduate school. PLEASE HELP ME I AM GOING TO GO CRAZY!
