10.13.6?

The macOS 10.13.6 "Combo" update is 2.49 GB: Download macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Combo Update

They are just burning up my hd.

Downloaded macOS update files are removed after installation. If that isn't happening, then something is wrong.

20 GB should be plenty, even though 120 GB isn't very much these days. To increase disk space please read Increase disk space.

Yeah, I figured 2x as much, but you are saying around 2.5x as much.

I was going to wait to show this to "John Galt" until after I did the dl and install (or more likely never did, so never show). Some people seem to thinkšŸ˜• that adding a dillion lines of code to an application somehow magically mystically disappear into the ether, like unicorn f-rts šŸ˜•.

So ~7GB for a f--king 100% useless application that I have never used and will never use.

Thank you.

Apple uses its Software Update service as a mechanism for installing ā€œbackground and criticalā€ updates that are installed silently in the background with no notifications to the user.

Are you saying that you've downloaded the updaters but never ran them to update the system? It sounds like that's what you're doing. Once you download a combo updater and install it you can delete it. You will not use up much hard drive space as the updater is just replacing files with new files. It sometimes add some new files but they don't require much space. So as long as you delete the updater after you've installed it you should not be losing space on your hard drive.

Depending on your exact model MBP (I'm guessing yours is a 2014 or earlier model) and your willingness to forego any remaining authorized Apple hardware service, and your ability to perform the work yourself, you might be able to upgrade its internal storage. Investigate that possibility by researching products from OWC / MacSales.

Beware that Apple doesn't approve of that sort of hardware modification, which means that some future Apple firmware upgrade could conceivably render a MBP that has been modified in that manner inoperable. It's happened.
