GPS in some specific area inside the car is disturbed.

I have a 2013 Hyundai Sonata.

I have an Iphone 8 Plus.

I will be using the term "Media Area" for the space in front of the dash where the CD player, Bluetooth, Radio and the screen are all located.

When I put the phone on my leg or it is with the person next to the driver or under the Media Area Google map, Waze and all other GPS-oriented apps work perfectly fine. However, as far as the phone is anywhere near the Media Area or in front of the screen the GPS gets disabled. I want to know the reason and how I can fix this problem.

What causes this problem. Is the media part of the car signaling bluetooth and that disables the GPS? That does not seem reasonable to me though. I have bought a very good phone mount for the front of the car, which gets fixed inside the CD player, but I am unable to use it cause my GPS does not work when it is on the mount. I made sure that the problem is not with the mount. When the phone is in my hand but in front of the Media Area or the CD player, the GPS does not work.

Please let me know what could cause this and if you have any solutions for fixing this issue.

Sounds like interference to me, which might be the Sonata's design, or it might come from a defect in your car electronics (e.g. missing electronic emission shielding, something not grounded properly, etc.) which is allowing low-level radiated emissions to interfere with the GPS signal. If your Sonata has its own GPS, it could be related to a problem with that system (not likely other electronics since GPS is up around 1.1-1.6 GHz).

If other Sonata owners don't have this issue, you might take it in for a look, but first see if another iPhone X in your car has the same issue, it could possibly be a defect in your iPhone X where the signal comes in, but weakly and in some cases very weak if the interference becomes strong enough.

Can you define "does not work"? Do you get a message indicating a problem, or is it that your location accuracy is way off, or delayed?

To my knowledge, there is no way for your car to disable your iPhone's GPS via Bluetooth or other means, but there could be areas of interference with the GPS signal, possibly from your car's own system and/or materials in the vicinity of the problem area. Maybe explain the symptom in more detail?

Hello Rockmyplimsoul,

Thanks for replying. Yes!! U mentioned it. The GPS is way delayed or way off the road. the pointer for example in Google Maps or Waze gets stuck on a place which is not even on the road. The accuracy gets awful.

I used to put the phone below this area and it used to work well. But ever since I installed the mount in the CD player and put the phone on that, this started happening. I first thought the problem might be with the mount but it is a very well known with good sale phone mount from Amazon and actually a friend of mine who has a 2013 Sonata suggested that to me so I don’t glue the mount to the glass or the dash. Also while the mount was installed my I took the phone close to the area in front of the screen and the mount, and it was delayed as when it is on the mount.

The phone GPS works perfectly on google map and Waze in any other area of the car.
