Greetings richrkg,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It seems like you had formatted an SD card, and the device you used it in reformatted it again and now it does not show up on the desktop. It may be that the SD card format is preventing it from being recognized. You can check in Disk Utility if it is being recognized by the computer, and check the formatting it has. Also, make sure the setting is enabled in the Finder so the SD card will appear on the desktop.

Disk Utility tries to detect the type of storage you're formatting, then shows the appropriate format in the Format menu. If it can't detect the type of storage, it defaults to Mac OS Extended, which works with all versions of macOS.

How to choose between APFS and Mac OS Extended when formatting a disk for Mac

  1. In the Finder, choose Finder > Preferences.

  2. Click General, then select the items you want to see on the desktop.

For example, if you select “CDs, DVDs, and iPods,” then you connect your iPod, its icon appears on your desktop.

macOS Sierra: See connected disks, iOS devices, and servers

Take care.

Hi richrkg,

It appears that your dash cam formatted the SD card with a format that macOS can't natively read or write to. If your dash cam came with a cable for connecting it to computers, try connecting the dash cam (with the SD card inside it) to your Mac via that cable to see whether the dash cam will be recognized in at least one of these places:

  • In Finder
  • On the desktop
  • In the Photos app as an import source

WARNING: Reformatting the SD card again will destroy all data on it.

This information is only applicable if you're using Disk Utility to format (erase) the SD card with a format that macOS can read and write to. The OP has already established that the dash cam (not their Mac) formatted the SD card.
