Using the function keys on an A1048 keyboard

For as long as I've been using an iMac, I've always preferred the classic A1048 keyboard, like this:User uploaded file

I've never been ab to use the Function keys (F1 to F16) before, so I need guidance in their use and function.

Ive tried Googling it, but the instruction shows something that doesn't appear in my window in Keyboard in System preferences. I get this, which bears no similarity to what the instruction advises:

The instruction says to go System Preferences>Keyboard and click on "Use all F1, F2 keys as standard function keys." That line doesn't appear in my System Preferences> Keyboard window.

I've also tried the other 4 buttons after Keyboard. Nothing!

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), 8Gb RAM Mackintosh HD. 1Tb.

Just to add, when you look on your keyboard there is nothing printed on the top of the function keys like more modern Apple keyboards…

So you have nothing to choose from.

Since you don't have the checkbox to set the Function keys

User uploaded file

you may have to use the Function key (Fn) in conjunction with the Function keys to get that key to work.

However, if you're running 10.13.6 as your profile states then you should have that checkbox. So do the following:

1 -boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, check the preferences and Function keys from there.

2 - log into another user account and check the Function keys from there.

3 - download and run Etrecheck. Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

On the subject of culprits, it's my opinion that Apple is a culprit for NOT INCLUDING the 'Use F1, F2 etc' in the latest update of High Sierra, or perhaps it wasn't even there to start with as can be seen from the screenshots below.

Sorry to have troubled you, but I've decided to knock the whole issue on the head and put the issue to bed.

Thank you for your input. A tad too involved for my liking.

I clicked on the link you gave me, but the '+' is not present in my System Preferences> Keyboard> Shortcuts window, per instruction 2. Select App Shortcuts on the left, click the Add button User uploaded file, click the Application pop-up menu, then choose a specific app or All Applications.User uploaded file

For what it's worth, I am using the latest update of High Sierra v 10.13.6.
