My MacBook Pro has lost the ability to record audio through the headphone jack. The Sound utility in System Preferences no longer has a drop down menu that allows the headphone jack to be switched to an audio input jack is missing. How can I fix this?

Audio input in the headphone jack is only for the monaural audio from a microphone built-in to a headphone set.
Depending on the unspecified model of your MacBook Pro, you may or may not have separate audio line level inputs.
Thanks for your response. It is the 13" model. Other sources suggest the jack can be used for recording directly from an audio mixer, but the controls necessary to change the jack's function are missing.
You should be using USB for any quality audio input.
