Cant´t create a new Folder in external HDD (Toshiba 2 tb) anymore, wich i could use before updating to high sierra 10.13.6 without any problem

Hi.

Just found out, that after updating to high sierra 10.13.6 i can't create new folders in the external HD (Toshiba 2tb) anymore. Before the update i was using it without any problems. Now the Option is not highlighted anymore. Tried 2 different Hdd as well wich i was also using before, but same problem.

Anyone a idea how to solve to that problem?1

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)

The best solution would be to format the drive for your Mac rather than for Windows. Caution, you will lose all the data on the drive if you format now.

The second option would be to figure out what third party app you are using and update it. You are likely using tuxera or paragon.

It is simply a matter of backing up any data you wish to save. Then you can reformat it with Disk Utility.

I think running an NTFS formatted disk is more tricky then it is reformat it.

I see the idea of sharing data with Windows users as a red herring. Data can be shared over the network in which case the format doesn't matter.

What format is the drive? If it is formatted NTFS for Windows did you update the third party app that allowed you to write to the drive when you upgraded to High Sierra?

Personally I think the correct solution to your problem is to reformat the drive to HFS+ rather then NTFS.

NTFS is the Microsoft Windows format and will only cause you problems in the long run.

You could also reformat the drive as ExFAT, that way it can be used with both Windows and Macs without 3rd party software.

I agree.I don't know why Mac users would use an NTFS formatted drive. As you said, data is data. I suppose it is convenient to just take an NTFS formatted drive and plug it into a Windows computer or a Mac and just use the drive. But then problems like the OP is experiencing pop up.

Hi

Jap after hours of online searching i now found out, that it is formatted to NTFS and that this seems to be the problem.

Not the biggest computer geek, so had no clue that after a update that would happen :-/

And had no clue that after that i`ll have to somehow also update drivers to maybe use it again....to me that just means i won't do any further updates in the future as things like that takes are doing my head in!!

sorry for getting a bit grumpy, but again to me i just wasted hours....

Anyway, could you maybe be so kind to help a non-pro like me out with so advice how to sort that problem out....or is it maybe just easier to buy another external drive

Yes. It was your choice to use tuxera rather than formatting your drive for Mac. I don't know why you would make such a decision.

my initial idea when i bought that drive was that it will be easier this way to get and share data with friends who might not have an apple product.

Anyway, again not a pro, so will that be fairly easy to do that conversion are rather tricky?!

Jap, just found out it is Tuxera.

Next question would be now, can i just simply update that without losing any data, or performance quality of my mac?!

....well just found out that the Tuxera update isn't free anyway.... 😠😮

well not really MY decision ..... when i bought the drive a few years ago i only read " .....works with both mac and windows" and i thought "ok, that's easy then" ....as i just had to plug it in and that was it!!!! didn't know anything about NTFS or HFS+ or any other formats... until 8 hours ago, when i discovered that i can't write on that drive now anymore....once again definitely no pro here

i had no clue, what problems would arise after an update of the mac

Amen. I can't remember how many times I have been called in to help with strange problem which were eventually traced to an external disk formatted as NTFS.
