Display split in half with lower resolution

G'day,

My iMac has a weird split-screen display problem when I use the "Settings -> Displays" to select "Scaled -> largest text". I am not using an external display, this is a problem with the iMac monitor itself. The screen appears to be split in half with the RHS correctly scaled to fill the right hand side of the screen but the LHS seems to not be scaled and instead have underscan bars inserted.

If I use the settings to try and scale to higher resolutions (to smaller text) the scaling works fine.

I have tried resolution changes using the settings app but also using SwitchResX both with the same result. With SwichResX I was able to see the upscaling works fine to higher settings but downscaling to resolutions below 1920x1080 HiDPI, or indeed any non-HiDPI settings below 3360 x 1890 causes the same artifact.

My system is an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015), with AMD Radeon R9 M395X 4096 MB, 4 GHz Intel Core i7, 32 GB1867 MHz DDR3 RAM).

I don't know if this has been a problem with the mac from the very beginning because up until recently I have had no reason to change the resolution.

Could someone tell me if this is a hardware problem or a driver issue? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Many thanks in advance for all your help!

Cheers,

Rich

Hi i_rina,

Thank you for your help, but unfortunately it didn't make fix the problem. I tried the NVRAM reset (CMD+ALT+P+R during boot, got the 3 start-up sounds etc), tried the new user account and trying it out in safe mode, but it was still the same behaviour. i am running out of ideas and I wonder if it is indeed a hardware / cable fault. But I wonder why it would only manifest at lower resolutions. It is a puzzle, for sure...

Cheers,

Greetings chudd,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities! I understand your Mac is showing a split-screen image unexpectedly when you select the Largest Text option from within the display resolution settings on your iMac.

Since the NVRAM can store display resolution settings, let's have you reset the NVRAM and test the behavior, as described in the following guide: Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac

Testing the behavior with safe mode and a new user account can further help to isolate the issue: Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac & How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Let me know how the provided suggestions work for you.

Kind regards.

Hi chudd,

Thanks for following up with your findings. The next step I suggest taking would be to ensure you have your information on your iMac backed up, as described in the following guide: Back up your Mac

After ensuring you've backed up your data, let's have you reinstall the software on your Mac. You can see the steps for reinstalling the software from the following guide: How to reinstall macOS

Let me know how it goes from here.

Cheers!
