Seperate photos on iCloud

My wife and I share an Apple ID so that we can share app and music purchases.

We also therefore share an iCloud account. But the problem there is that we see eachothers photos! How do we keep them seperate?

I believe we have to share an Apple ID in order to share music and app purchases correct?

And I do not see a way to log into iCloud with a different Apple ID.

By the way, my wife does have her own Apple ID for FaceTime.

If I transfer all of her pictures to her via AirDrop she will have them all. And will they then just go to iCloud for storage again? And if they go to iCloud am I just going to continue seeing them? Or do we have our own separate iCloud photo “repositories”?

If you are each signed into iCloud with your own Apple ID, you each have your own iCloud Photo Library. You don't see what is in her iCloud Photo Library and she doesn't see what is in yours. After you AirDrop the photos to her they will automatically upload to her iCloud Photo Library. If you delete them from your phone after sending them via AirDrop you will no longer see them.

Going forward, any picture either of us takes on our phones will go to iCloud and then end up on both phones? Or do they only appear on the phone they were taken on unless you upload it to a shared folder on iCloud?

They will only be on both phones if they are shared. As described in a previous reply, a shared album is automatically created when you turn on family sharing. There is more information on using that in iCloud Photo Sharing - Apple Support

I think I may be even more confused now!

Thanks again! I will get this eventually! And I’ll have you to thank for it!

This is starting to make sense in my little head!

So I am Air Dropping pics to her right now and they are showing up on her phone. But they are also taking up more and more space on her phone! Within her iCloud settings I have her Photos turned on, Optimize iPhone Storage on, Upload to My Photo Stream turned on, and iCloud Photo sharing turned off. We don’t really want to share any pics...hers are hers and mine are mine.

Okay thanks! I switched her phone over to her own Apple ID and then set up Family Sharing on my phone to share purchases and iCloud for now.

My next question is again in regards to photos though. Now I still see ALL photos on my phone (mine and hers). But she is only seeing a very small selection of photos.

1) how do I get her phone to see all the photos on iCloud?

2) how do we then separate the photos to have our own?

Thanks again!

iCloud Photo Library is a syncing service. Any photo you delete from a device where iCloud Photo Library is turned on will also be deleted from iCloud and from any other device connected to that iCloud Photo Library. You can potentially reduce the storage space required on a device by turning on Optimize Storage. See: iCloud Photo Library - Apple Support

Apple does not currently offer cloud-only storage for photos. If that is what you want or need, you may want to explore 3rd party options such as Google Photos or Dropbox.

Regarding her photos that are on your phone and your iCloud Photo Library, you will need to transfer them to her. One way to do that is via AirDrop: Use AirDrop on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Once they are on her phone you can delete them from yours and they will also delete from your iCloud. Once you have her photos on her phone and only your photos on your phone you can then share the photos that you want to have on both phones. See the following from Family Sharing - Apple Support

When you set up your family, a shared album is created automatically in the Photos app on all family members’ devices. Everyone can add photos, videos, and comments to the album whenever they like and get notified when something new is added.

If you AirDrop her photos to her and then delete them from your phone and neither of you puts any photos in the shared album, you will each have your own photos.

Her photos will take up space on her phone -- whether she takes new photos or receives them via AirDrop. Optimize Storage only optimizes if the phone is low on space. See the following from iCloud Photo Library - Apple Support

If you turn on Optimize Storage, iCloud Photo Library automatically manages the size of your library on your device. Your original photos and videos are stored in iCloud and space-saving versions are kept on your device. Your library is optimized only when you need space, starting with the photos and videos you access least. You can download the original photos and videos over Wi-Fi or cellular when you need them. You can use Optimize Storage on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac.
