MacBook Pro late 2011 freez with Gray screen

Dear all,

I have a MacBook Pro from late 2011, there has been working fine until now...but when i start i now it just freez with a gray screen. Sometimes there is the apple logo and a time bar but it stops a little over half way and nothing happens after.

I have trys all combinations of start up, but nothing gets me through. I have tried to reinstall it but i never get to the menu. It connects to the internet and downloads something and then it stops.

I have runned a full HW test with no problems found.

So my questions now is, is my mac compleatly dead now after so many years, or might it be the harddisk there is no longer working (it is a 256 SSD disk).

Any good idears what to try?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

Reinstall Lion To Yosemite Without Erasing the Drive

Be sure to back up before proceeding.

  1. Restart the computer and at the chime press and hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears.
  2. Choose Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on the Continue button.
  3. After Disk Utility loads select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) entry from the side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button.
  4. When the process finishes, quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  5. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

If the above does not work then try:

Internet/Network Recovery of El Capitan or Later on a Clean Disk

If possible back up your files before proceeding.

  1. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the (Command-Option-R) keys until a globe appears.
  2. The Utility Menu will appear in from 5-20 minutes. Be patient.
  3. Select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button.
  4. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (usually, the out-dented entry) from the side list.
  5. Click on the Erase tab in Disk Utility's main window. A panel will drop down.
  6. Set the partition scheme to GUID.
  7. Set the Format type to APFS (SSDs only) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  8. Click on the Apply button, then click on the Done button when it activates.
  9. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  10. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

Note:

1. To install the version of OS X that was currently installed use Command-Option-R.

2. To install the original factory version when the computer was new use Command-Option-Shift-R.

If your model did not come with Software Restore DVDs, then you can use network recovery:

Internet/Network Recovery of El Capitan or Later on a Clean Disk

If possible back up your files before proceeding.

  1. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the (Command-Option-Shift-R) keys until a globe appears.
