Can I play music downloaded via Apple Music on a laptop that doesn't run iTunes

This would go for basically any old computer. I routinely bring my Surface with me when I travel (I'm a truck driver) and don't often have it connected to the internet. I have an extensive mp3 library that I've accumulated over the last ten years or so which takes up most of my HD space, and this is my usual method of listening to music on the road. If I subscribe to Apple Music, and download songs through that service, will my older RT tablet (which isn't compatible with iTunes) recognize the DRM protected status and refuse to play the songs? Remember it is not often connected to the internet on the road.

So I could download unlimited music to my iPhone, but don't have the ability to transfer that music to another computer that doesn't run iTunes. Is that what you're saying? That makes sense in terms of DRM but it also means there's no reason for me to use the service...I'll just keep paying for unrestricted individual albums and songs. At least the artists actually make some money for that. 😉 Thanks.
