Contacts are duplicated

My Mac has OS Sierra, ver 10.12.6. All my contacts appear in duplicate or triplicate. This may have happened after the last update. Is there a way to remove all duplicates easily?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

Do you sync your Contacts with iCloud? If so, try the following:

On your Mac

  1. Make a copy of your contacts.
  2. Open Contacts.
  3. From the Card menu, select Card > Look for Duplicates.
  4. When asked, click Merge.
  5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until no duplicates are found.
  6. Make another copy of your iCloud Contacts.
